REGISTRATION AND ENTRY INFORMATION

The 2017 New Zealand National Karate Championships and National Secondary Schools will be held at the Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua, Wellington.

• Participation in the Nationals is open to all KNZ registered clubs.

• WKF Rules will be applied in the both Tournaments.

• The Secondary Schools competition is open to all fulltime students of New Zealand Secondary Schools. Please enter online in the "SEC SCHOOLS" divisions and provide the Secondary Schools declaration form, at the bottom of this, signed by the School Principal when registering. This form must be handed in on the day to tournament organisers. Without this form you cannot compete in the Secondary Schools tournament.

Discount for family members (living at the same address) is $10 for each additional competitor

If paying entry fees by internet banking please ensure that you note that the payment is for National Champs by using NZNC17 as the code and the competitor’s surname.

• Saturday 15th  July      14yrs+ Cadets, Juniors, Seniors, Veterans, Super Veterans & National Secondary Schools

  • 8.30am             Registration

  • 9.30am             Tournament commences (Team Kata events first then individual kata then kumite)

• Sunday 16th July         6-13yrs & complete National Secondary Schools if required

  • 8.00am             Registration

  • 8.30am             Tournament commences (Team Kata events first then individual kata then kumite)

Secondary Schools will run alongside the Nationals and start on Saturday morning. Depending on numbers it may also continue on Sunday. 

NATIONAL OPEN TRAINING CAMP

Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on Monday 17th July and Tuesday 18th July. Train with National team members under the guidance of the National Coaches. For more information and attendance form visit www.karatenz.co.nz

 

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

All entries must be completed online by 10 July 2017, accompanied by entry fees.  

The following dress and safety equipment code will apply:

• All competitors must wear a clean white Gi in good condition as per Art. 2 of WKF Rules

• All Kumite competitors must wear mouthguards

• All Kumite competitors must wear approved hand mitts and shin/instep protectors

• Head gear is optional and will be available at the Nationals

13 yrs & below

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

• Advised to wear KNZ Approved face protector

• WKF Children Chest Protector is required to be worn outside the Gi

14 -15yrs

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

• Advised to wear KNZ Approved face protector

• Advised to wear KNZ approved body protector

Female 14-15yrs

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

• Compulsory to wear approved chest protectors underneath the body protector

Females 11-13yrs

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

• Advised to wear women’s chest protector

• WKF Children Chest Protector is required to be worn outside the Gi

Males 14yrs and over

• Boys advised to wear approved groin protector.

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

16yrs and above

• KNZ Approved red/blue hand and Shin and instep protectors

• KNZ approved body protectors is optional

• Women compulsory to wear approved chest protectors

• Men advised to wear approved groin protector.

 

COMPETITION RULES

General Rules

• Divisions may be split into 3 levels: Development, Intermediate and Premier
  • Note: the only development divisions for this tournament are for the 6/7 & 8/9 year olds.
  • Intermediate - Less than 10 Karate NZ tournaments
  • Premier - Open to all players
• Players cannot enter more than one level at the same tournament
• Non premier events will not be considered by Selectors regarding National Team and Squad selection
• Article 2 of the WKF rules stipulates that "Contestants must wear a white karate gi without stripes, piping or personal embroidery". Players in Development & Intermediate level competition may have personal embroidery on their Gi's, and their Belts. Players in premier divisions must follow the WKF rules.
• During the bow in at the beginning of tournament all players must be in Gi or Tracksuit and must present themselves correctly

Kumite Rules

• Article 2 of the WKF rules stipulates that "All protective equipment must be WKF homologated". For Karate NZ competition, it is sufficient for the protective equipment to be of a WKF style.
• Appendix 10 of the WKF rules stipulates specific rules for childrens competition aged 10 to 13. For Karate NZ competition, the following rules will be used for all children aged 13 and below:
  • For techniques to the head and neck (Jodan area) no contact is allowed. 
  • Any contact to the jodan area , however slight, in principle will be penalized. 
  • A correctly performed technique to the head or neck in principle will be considered a score at a distance up to 10 cm. 
  • The bout duration is one and a half minutes. 
  • WKF Children Chest Protector is required to be worn outside the Gi

Kata Rules

• Development Kata Events are limited to Kihon Kata and Competitors can repeat each round.
  • Heian 1-5
  • Pinan 1-5
  • Gekisai 1-2
  • Saifa.  
• Intermediate Kata Events may use any kata from the official WKF list. (This list includes the above Development Kata).  Repeat ABCABC. Ie. Competitors must know at least 3 different Kata to enter Intermediate level Kata competition.
• Premier Kata Events may use any kata from the official WKF list. (This list includes the above Development Kata).  Repeats are not allowed.
• For Under 10 years there may not be premier divisions, in which case experienced athletes can enter Intermediate if available, or Development if not.

The judging of all Kata competition will follow the WKF flag system, either 3 or 5 judges.

Team Kata

9yrs and under              only one kata required, NO Bunkai required for medal rounds

10-13yrs                       Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds

14-17yrs                       Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds

16yrs+                          As per WKF rules

Repechage:

Divisions with three competitors will be run round robin with the placing decided on the number of wins achieved.  If each competitor has one win each then placing will be decided on total points scored.

Divisions with four competitors will have a match between the two competitors who have not won a match to decide on one third place.

Divisions with five competitors will use a modified Brazilian repechage system to decide equal third place (the two first round losers will play off for one of the third equal placings)

Divisions with six or more competitors will use Brazilian repechage to decide the third-equal places.

Divisions with sixteen or more competitors may have a plate competition for competitors who lose in the first round and do not get a repechage match.

For Karate, Brazilian repechage involves the competitors who were beaten by a finalist playing-off to decide the 3rd / 3rd equal placing/s. This means that all medal winners, except possibly for third-place in a round-robin division, will have won at least one match.

Coaches

As per WKF rules, follow the code of behaviour and the dress code, namely club or national tracksuit. Only one coach can be present on the mat at a time; only official coaches on the mat and in the warm up area.
