Hamilton Wado-Kai and CNI are honoured to invite local, regional and national karate clubs and styles to participate in this open tournament. 

This competition will cater to all levels - Development, Intermediate and Premier, and it is our hope that new competitors enjoy this opportunity to try out a karate tournament as well as learn from more experienced athletes.

Fraser High School, 72 Ellicott Road

Nawton, Hamilton

 

Keep left after entering the school driveway and follow the lane around to the gym.

Parking is available on-site.

 

To exit school - head back towards entrance and continue straight along driveway. 

Exit is on Nyanza Street.

 

 

FOOD AND DRINK

Nawton Mall is approx. 5 mins from the school.  It has a bakery and supermarket.

If you are after a much classier coffee Te Awa (The Base) is 10 mins drive north on SH1 / Avalon Drive Bypass

 

The Hamilton Wado-Kai Tournament Squad will be running a sausage sizzle on the day, so if you forgot to bring your lunch, the squad will be selling $10 lunch packs.  To pre-order, open the Hamilton Open Karate Championships Information Sheet' under 'Downloads' and click on the link under Food and Drink.  Open the Pre-Ordered Lunch Menu also located under 'Downloads' to order your selection.

No late entries or changes will be accepted after this date.  If there are insufficient entries in a particular division, divisions may be combined.

 

REFUND POLICY

Entry Fee will be refunded if a competitor withdraws by Sunday 23rd June 2019.   Refunds after this date will only be given if a Medical Certificate is forwarded to the Tournament Organiser.  If your division has been cancelled due to lack of numbers, we will do our best to reallocate to another division.  A full refund will be given if you have only entered one event and we have not been able to place you.  We apologise for any inconvenience.

GENERAL RULES

OFFICIAL DRESS ETIQUETTE

As per Article 2 of the WKF rules, all competitors must wear a white karategi without stripes, piping or personal embroidery,    and must be in good condition.   For this tournament, the following will apply:

  • Development or Intermediate competitors may have personal embroidery on their Gi’s and belts. Premier competitors must abide by WKF rules
  • During the bow-in at the beginning of the tournament, competitors must wear a Gi or Club Tracksuit.  No jeans or shorts allowed
  • Coaches must wear Club Tracksuit (and shoes) when coaching their competitors on the mat, no exceptions

 

 

COMPETITION RULES

Competitors cannot enter more than one level in the same discipline, e.g. if entering Development kata, cannot also enter Intermediate and Premier Kata divisions.

WKF rules apply to this tournament with the following modifications:

 

KATA AND KUMITE JUDGING

KATA

  • The old WKF flag system will be used for all Kata
  • Team Kata (comprised of 3-5 members, only 3 will perform) will follow the same rules as Individual Kata
    • 5-9 Years - repeats allowed.  Bunkai  not required
    • 10-13 Years - repeats allowed and Bunkai for medal rounds
    • 14+ Years - no repeats and Bunkai for medal rounds

The total time allowed for the Team Kata and Bunkai demonstration is 5 minutes.

 

KUMITE

  • The WKF rules - points, warnings and penalties will be used for all Kumite events including Team Kumite
  • Team Kumite (comprised of 3-5 members, only 3 will perform) - to ensure teams are evenly matched to compete against each other, please make sure there is one of each age in your group

 

KATA AND KUMITE REPECHAGE

Competitors who were beaten by a finalist will play-off to decide 3rd or 3rd equal placings (repechage).  All medal winners, except possibly for third-place in a round robin division, will have won at least one match.

Divisions with:

  • Three (3) competitors - a round robin will occur with placings decided on by the number of wins achieved.  If each competitor has one win, placings will be decided on total points scored
  • Four to Eight (4-8) competitors - one third place will be decided using repechage
  • Nine (9) or more competitors - repechage will be used to decide third-equal placings

 

KATA CRITERIA

Development - Must be a kyu grade and can only perform Kihon Kata -

Heian 1-5, Pinan 1-5, Gekisai and Saifa

Repeats are allowed.

Maximum time in division:  2 years

 

Intermediate - Any Kata from the official WKF list including Development Kata.

Repeats allowed but not consecutively e.g. ABCABC.  Competitors must know 3 different Kata to enter this level.

Maximum time in division:  2 years

 

Premier - Can perform any Kata from the official WKF list including Development Kata.

No Repeats permitted.

 

Under 10 Years - Competitors in Intermediate and Premier are required to perform Development Kata except in medal rounds when Premier Kata may be performed.

No repeats permitted.

 

All Kata competitors must announce the name of the Kata being performed and bow inside the competition area before and after the Kata is completed. 

Failure to bow will result in disqualification.

 

KUMITE CRITERIA

13 Years and Below - Techniques to the head and neck (Jodan area) can score but absolutely NO contact will be allowed.  Any contact (unless by self-endangerment - Mubobi) including skin touch will be penalised.

 

14-17 Years - Same as above applies, however, Jodan kicks may make the lightest skin touch.  Anything more than this will be penalised.

 

18+ Years - WKF rules will apply

The first competitor to 8 points or with the most points at the time up will be declared the winner.

WKF rules will be used for all Kumite events, including Team Kumite.

 

KUMITE DURATION (AS PER WKF RULES)

  • 6-13 Years                        1.5 minutes
  • 14-17 Years                       2 minutes
  • 18 Years+ (Male and Female)

                                                    3 minutes

  • Veteran                            2 minutes
  • Team Kumite (comprised of 3-5 members)
  • 6-11 Years                  1.5 minutes
  • 12-17 Years                 2 minutes
  • 18 Years+                   3 minutes

 

SAFETY EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

All protective equipment must be of a WKF style and worn during Kumite, therefore the following is compulsory:

  • Body Protector
  • Red and Blue Hand Mitts
  • Red and Blue Shin/Foot Protectors
  • Red and Blue Belts
  • Mouthguard

 

Optional equipment may be worn (must be WKF style):

  • Groin Protector
  • Chest Protector (Females)
  • Face Mask

 

The below conditions apply for age groups:

13 Years and Below

  • Compulsory to wear WKF style Body Protector (worn outside the Gi)
  • Advised to wear a Face Mask
  • Advised to wear Chest Protector (Females)
  • Foot protectors do not have to match the belt colour being worn at the time of bout

 

14 Years and Above

  • Compulsory to wear WKF style Body Protector (worn inside the Gi)
  • Advised to wear Chest Protector (Females)
  • Foot protectors must match the belt colour being worn at the time of bout
