All entries will be first on a waiting list and have to be attended by the event manager. The event manager manually moves these entries to the list of official entries after they are approved and / or after paying the entry fee. If you have any questions please contact the event manager.

We have the honour of inviting you to Karate Auckland’s premier tournament the Auckland Open 2019.  This tournament includes development, intermediate and premier divisions.  Development divisions are for the children categories only. This is ton give them the opportunity to try a karate tournament as well as a chance to learn from our more experienced competitors. Our hope is that this format will provide participants a good experience in tournament karate but we also want you have an enjoyable time. Whether this is because that you are successful in this tournament or it is because of your results or improvement or just meeting like-minded karateka and making new friends. We look forward to seeing you there!

          Kumite events follow finishing with Team Kumite except ALL SENIOR FINALS MATCHES WILL BE HELD AT END OF THE MORNING EVENTS.

A more accurate schedule will be produced when competitor numbers are known. Divisions may start earlier or later than stated above.


All entries must be submitted by Sunday 11th August, 2019. No late entries or changes will be accepted.

All entries must be completed online on Sportdata by Sunday 11th August 2019. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.


If there are insufficient entries in a particular division then divisions may be combined or not held


Full refund of Entry Fee paid can only be given if a competitor withdraws by Sunday 11th August 2019 as the draw will be prepared the next day.  Refunds after this date will only be provided if a Medical Certificate is forwarded to the Tournament Organiser.  If your event has been cancelled due to lack of numbers and you have not been reallocated to another event then you will be entitled to a refund for that portion of your entry fee.



Competition Karate within New Zealand is run under the World Karate Federation (WKF) rules. We are currently running under the 2019 version of the WKF rules with modifications specific to Karate New Zealand.



Karate NZ Specific Rules

The following modifications are in operation at Karate NZ events. This includes National and Regional competitions.

General Rules

  • Divisions are split into 3 levels. Development, Intermediate and Premier 
    • Development -This is for Children categories.  You can only perform develeopment kata as listed below.
    • Intermediate - Is a stepping stone to help enter premier events and to gain more experience at a higher competiton level. It is suggested if you have won a medal in tis category that you participate in the Premier divisions.
    • Premier - Open to all players
  • Players can enter only one level (development/intermediate/premier) for kumite but may enter a different level for kata at the same tournament
  • Non premier events WILL NOT be considered by Selectors regarding National Team and Squad selection
  • Article 2 of the WKF rules stipulates that "Contestants must wear a white karate gi without stripes, piping or personal embroidery". Players in Development or Intermediate level competition may have personal embroidery on their Gi's, and their Belts. Players in premier divisions must follow the WKF rules.
  • During the bow in at the beginning of tournament all players must be in Gi or Tracksuit and must present themselves correctly

Kata Rules

  • Development Kata Events are limited to Kihon Kata and Competitors can repeat each round. 
    • Heian 1-5
    • Pinan 1-5
    • Gekisai 1-2
    • Saifa.  
  • Intermediate Kata Events may use any kata from the official WKF list. (This list includes the above Development Kata).  Kata may be repeated in an A,B,C,A,B,C fashion. Ie. Competitors must know at least 3 different Kata to enter Intermediate level Kata competition.
  • Premier Kata Events may use any kata from the official WKF list. (This list includes the above Development Kata).  Repeats are not allowed.

Kumite Rules

  • Article 2 of the WKF rules stipulates that "All protective equipment must be WKF homologated". For Karate NZ competition, it is sufficient for the protective equipment to be of a WKF style. The organiser has the right to refuse the use of protective equipment deemed not fit for purpose or competitors own safety.
  • Appendix 10 of the WKF rules stipulates specific rules for childrens competition aged 10 to 13. For Karate NZ competition, the following rules will be used for all children aged 13 and below: 
    • For techniques to the head and neck (Jodan area) no contact is allowed. 
    • Any contact to the jodan area, however slight, in principle will be penalized. 
    • A correctly performed technique to the head or neck in principle will be considered a score at a distance up to 10 cm. 
    • The bout duration is one and a half minutes. 
    • WKF Children Chest Protector is required to be worn outside the Gi

  • I am registering willingly and participating voluntarily in this karate competition known as the Auckland Open 2019. Herein after referred to as “EVENT”.

  • My accepted entry into the Event will not be transferred to another entrant.

  • That in the event of any ‘Act of God’ conditions that force a cancellation of this Event, my total entry

    fee is not transferable or refundable.

  • I am acknowledging that I am in an appropriate socio-emotional/behavioural, cognitive and physical

    condition to participate in the Event, given the extra-ordinary parameters of a karate tournament.

  • I acknowledge that I have taken medical advice regarding any pre-existing medical conditions and

    confirm that I am medically fit to participate in the Event.

  • I acknowledge that there are risks and hazards involved in the Event and I fully recognise and realise the dangers of participating in this karate tournament. I therefore assume and take full responsibility for the risks associated with my participation.

  • I understand and agree that situations may arise during the Event that may be beyond the immediate control of the Event organisers (including all officials and Event volunteers).

  • I will participate in this tournament, in a manner that does not recklessly endanger either myself or others.

  • That to the extent permissible by law, the Event organisers (including all officials and event volunteers), the sponsors and other parties associated with the Event, have no liability whatsoever for any direct or indirect loss (including, but not limited to, injury or death) sustained by me during, or in any way related to, my participation in this tournament.

  • I authorise the use of my name, voice, picture and any other information related to this Event in any broadcast, telecast, promotion, advertising, or social media platform, without the requirement of payment or any other form of compensation.

  • I agree to comply with all the rules, and regulations pertaining to the Event.

  • I agree to follow all safety instructions provided to me by the Event organisers, (including all officials and Event volunteers) before, during and after this Event.

  • I consent to receiving medical treatment in the event of illness or injury suffered during or immediately following my participation in the Event.

  • I will participate and exhibit the behaviour and spirit that is expected of a Karateka, conducting myself in a manner that brings credit to myself, my karate club / organisation, and Karate Auckland Incorporated.

  • I understand and acknowledge that by submitting my entry into this Event that the Event organisers (including all officials and Event volunteers) can provide no guarantees or assurances, regarding my wellbeing and safety, and are therefore not liable for any injury or damages suffered by me during or after the Event.
