1.     Welcome

Barney, Keith, and the Central North Island Karate region would like to invite you to the 2021 CNI Open on the 11th of April.

We are excited to host a tournament in our region this year considering the unfortunate events of 2020. We hope to create an inclusive tournament, open to all styles and affiliations, competing together for the betterment of Karate.

The CNI Open 2021 will be introducing some new protocols to provide more mat time for the players. We are introducing different division formats to maximise the number of fights and, in Premier categories, players can also enter the age category directly above their own.

We look forward to seeing you all in Hamilton!

Yours sincerely,

Barney Gill                           barneygill@gmail.com

Keith Crawford                     kiwicapers2000@gmail.com

Thank you to our sponsor for the event - DKJ Welding Services Ltd.

For Premier events only, all players may choose to also enter in the division directly above their age division for Kata and Kumite (i.e. eleven-year-olds can enter in 10/11 and 12/13 categories, but not 8/9 or 14/15) *. Weight categories change in Kumite divisions, and players must ensure to enter the correct events for both categories. For Kumite events, please note the following,

  • 12/13-year-old players entering 14/15 should be aware kicks can score with skin touch to the head.
  • 16/17-year-olds may enter the U21 division, but not the Senior Division. The U21 category runs to senior rules, where contact to the head with punches can score, and the fight duration is three minutes.
  • Senior (18+) players may not enter the Veteran (35+) category for Kata or Kumite. However, Veterans may wish to also enter the Senior Category.
  • 8/9 years Kata will be run as Development; however, these players may also enter the 10/11 Premiere.

Under 8’s divisions will run under Development rules, while +35 Veterans will follow Development rules for Kumite and Premier rules for Kata.

*If two such occasions occur where a player competing in an age category above their own receives a hit resulting in direct Hansoku, then all further up-age entries will be cancelled and refunded.

*Two Flag System

A contestant requires two flags to score just the same as the WKF ruling. However, in the two-flag system, there are only two judges (with flags) and one referee. The referee abides by the same rules as WKF, but can also signal for points, and therefore becomes a third flag. Therefore, a player will score when both judges signal a point, or one judge and the referee signal a point. The referee will signal their flag by holding the arm out bent, palm open, at the height indicating either 1, 2 or 3 points.

** Provided there is an adequate number of referees.

KATA

All kata events will follow the flag system, with either 3 or 5 judges.

Development

Kata include Heian, Pinan, Gekisai, Saifa and any other Kihon Kata

  • All Development Kata will be performed by two players at a time.
  • Players can repeat Kata in consecutive order.
  • As these are development divisions, developing referees may be used for their experience. Absolutely no offensive behaviour towards the referees will be accepted.
