Barney, Keith, and the Central North Island Karate region would like to invite you to the 2021 CNI Open on the 11th of April.
We are excited to host a tournament in our region this year considering the unfortunate events of 2020. We hope to create an inclusive tournament, open to all styles and affiliations, competing together for the betterment of Karate.
The CNI Open 2021 will be introducing some new protocols to provide more mat time for the players. We are introducing different division formats to maximise the number of fights and, in Premier categories, players can also enter the age category directly above their own.
We look forward to seeing you all in Hamilton!

Thank you to our sponsor for the event - DKJ Welding Services Ltd.

2 Competitors will fight each other three times.
3 Round robin. Competitors will fight each other two times.
4-5 Round robin. Competitors fighting each other once.

6-8 Double Elimination. players are not eliminated until they lose two matches.
Players that lose in the first round are sent to the loser's bracket, while those that win are sent to the winner's bracket. Teams in the loser's bracket still can win the tournament. They cannot, however, lose another match for the remainder of the tournament.
One bronze medal will be awarded in events with less than 8 players.
9+ Normal WKF Single Elimination system with repechage to determine third-equal.
For Premier events only, all players may choose to also enter in the division directly above their age division for Kata and Kumite (i.e. eleven-year-olds can enter in 10/11 and 12/13 categories, but not 8/9 or 14/15) *. Weight categories change in Kumite divisions, and players must ensure to enter the correct events for both categories. For Kumite events, please note the following,
Under 8’s divisions will run under Development rules, while +35 Veterans will follow Development rules for Kumite and Premier rules for Kata.

Draws will be emailed to all registered clubs prior to the event, along with paper versions available at the venue.
The Competition will follow the WKF rules, outside of those specifically noted within this bulletin.
*Two Flag System
A contestant requires two flags to score just the same as the WKF ruling. However, in the two-flag system, there are only two judges (with flags) and one referee. The referee abides by the same rules as WKF, but can also signal for points, and therefore becomes a third flag. Therefore, a player will score when both judges signal a point, or one judge and the referee signal a point. The referee will signal their flag by holding the arm out bent, palm open, at the height indicating either 1, 2 or 3 points.
** Provided there is an adequate number of referees.
All kata events will follow the flag system, with either 3 or 5 judges.
Kata include Heian, Pinan, Gekisai, Saifa and any other Kihon Kata
