It is with great pleasure that Ophir Karate Association are hosting the Irish Wado KARATE Championship for the 5th year.

We are delighted to welcome back our old friends and look forward to enjoying WKF karate competition with new friends.  Our ethos has been to promote Wado-Ryu for beginner, intermediate and advanced Karate-ka alike, therefore this single style tournament brings together only Wado clubs and welcomes new athletes, coaches and officials to participate in this event, in a friendly, informative and supportive environment.

Adapted Rules of Kata Competition:

Children 9yrs and under and Team Category can repeat their kata / Children 10-15yrs may alternate between 2 katas / 16yrs+ will follow WKF rules and perform a different kata in each round. We will adhere to the scoring system for kata competition.

Adapted Rules of Kumite Competition:

PROTECTION: All Athletes must wear gum shield and red/blue mitts.  Children 9yrs + will also wear red/blue shin/foot protection and body guards, which can be worn over the gi to allow for ease of sharing/hygiene (we will not adopt the face mask protection.  Cadet + (14yrs+) will follow WKF rules of kumite competition. 

TIMINGS: Children 5-7yrs will fight for 1 minute / 8-13yrs will fight for 1 minute and 30 seconds. / Cadet, Junior and Veterans will fight for 2 minutes / Adults 18yrs+ will fight for 3 minutes.

Time permitting - it is hoped to permit children 5-11yrs who are knocked-out in the first round the opportunity to fight again for experience against another competitor who was also put out in the first round (as per WKF recommendations).

IT IS ASSUMED THAT ALL TEAM MANAGERS/COACHES HAVE ARRANGED APPROPRIATE INSURANCE COVER FOR THEIR ATHLETES. Ophir Karate do NOT accept responsibility for Managers/Coaches who have entered their students without appropriate insurance cover.

Please be advised that in the interest of safe, competitive competition, the organisers reserve the right to amalgamate categories. FINAL CATEGORIES WILL BE ADVISED PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION.
