NEW ZEALAND OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

21st & 22nd April, 2018

The 2018 New Zealand OPEN Karate Championships will be held at the Pioneer Sports Stadium, 75 Lyttleton Street, Spreydon, Christchurch.

  1. Participation in this tournament is open to all clubs and International Federations.
  2. WKF Rules will be applied in the Tournament.      
  3. International Competitors can make payment before the Championships by e-mail.
  4. All entries are final. Please copy one appropriate form per competitor. Ensure all entry forms are completed correctly as incorrect age information may result in disqualification from the tournament.
  5. Coaches please ensure you player information is up to date in the sportsdata system, athletes get older and heavier/lighter and change grades. (The sportsdata system will only adjust age...not weight or grade).

Development – Along the lines of 1st or 2nd competition, must be a Kyu grade only, must do development kata, you can only be in this division a maximum of 2 years, this is also for all competitors 9yrs and under. You will be split by weight and grade / kyu. Compulsory Kata only.

Intermediate – More experienced in tournaments but not at premier level yet, you cannot be selected for NZ Teams for overseas events if you compete in this division.  Any kata possible, no repeats, you can only be in this division a maximum of 2 years

Premier – Any age, any Kata no repeats, WKF rules apply. Eligible for NZ team selection

Kumite – All kumite divisions will be split into Oceania weight divisions so please make sure your weight is correctly entered otherwise you may be disqualified from that weight division.

  • Saturday 21st April    – for competitors 13 years and Under
    • 8.00am             Registration and weigh in
    • 9.00am             Opening Ceremony (all competitors and Officials)
    • 9.15am             Tournament commences 
  • Sunday 22nd April     – for competitors 14 years and Over  
    • 8.30am             Registration and weigh in
    • 9.00am             Tournament commences

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

All Entries must be received by 14th April, 2018, accompanied by entry fees and correct information. Incorrect entries and non payment will show as an unapproved entry in Sportdata.

The following dress and safety equipment code will apply:

  • All competitors must wear a clean white Gi in good condition as per Art. 2 of WKF Rules

  • All Kumite competitors must wear mouthguards

  • All Kumite competitors must wear approved hand mitts and shin/instep protectors

  • Compulsory to wear KNZ approved body protector

  • Head gear is optional

  • Boys/Men advised to wear approved groin protectors

 

The below conditions also apply for age group

13 yrs & below

  • Advised to wear KNZ Approved face protector

  • Compulsory to wear WKF Child Chest Protector, to be worn outside the Gi

Females 11-13yrs

  • Advised to wear women’s chest protector (breast protector)

  • Compulsory to wear KNZ approved body protector

14 yrs & above

  • Compulsory to wear KNZ approved body protector, to be worn under the Gi.

Female 14 yrs & above

  • Compulsory to wear KNZ approved body protector

  • Advised to wear approved chest protectors(breast protector) underneath the body protector

 

COMPETITION RULES

As per current WKF Rules with the following modifications

KUMITE RULES TO APPLY TO ALL KARATE NEW ZEALAND (UNZKO) SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS:

On scoring/contact:

1.  9 yrs and under – Techniques to the head can score but absolutely NO contact will be allowed. Any contact at all, (unless by Mubobi) including skin touch, will be penalised. The first player to 8 points or the player with the most points at the time up will be deemed the winner. All competitors in this division will be classed as development and will be split by weight and grade

2.  10-13 yrs - Techniques to the head can score but absolutely NO contact will be allowed. Any contact at all, (unless by Mubobi) including skin touch, will be penalised.

3. 14yrs+ - Cadet (14/15), Juniors (16/17) and seniors (18+) – as per WKF rulebook.

KATA TO BE JUDGED AS FOLLOWS:

The judging of all Kata competition will follow the WKF flag system, either 3 or 5 judges.

Children’s Compulsory Kata list: Heian, Pinan, Gekusai, Saifa, or any other Kihon Kata.

In the divisions 9 yrs and under competitors are required to perform “Compulsory Kata Only” (as listed above).

Competitors can repeat Kata. The list above are the only Kata accepted in this age group.

For 10-13yrs, the new WKF rules will apply. Free choice in all rounds, no repetition.

For Veteran and Super Veteran Free choice in all rounds, no repetition.

For WKF Divisions 14/15, 16/17 & 16yrs+, the new WKF rules will apply. Free choice Kata in all rounds, no repetition permitted.

Team Kata

9yrs and under              only one kata required, Bunkai required for medal rounds

10-13yrs                        Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds

14-17yrs                        Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds

16yrs+                          Free Kata in all rounds, no repetition permitted, Bunkai required for medal rounds

 

Repechage:

Divisions with three competitors will be run round robin with the placing’s decided on the number of wins achieved.  If each competitor has one win each then placing’s will be decided on total points scored. If total points scored are even then total points scored against will be calculated with the lowest total declared the winner.

Divisions with four competitors will have a match between the two competitors who have not won a match to decide on one third place.

Divisions with four to eight competitors will have one third place decided using the repechage system

Divisions with nine or more competitors will use repechage to decide the third-equal placing’s. 

For Karate, repechage involves the competitors who were beaten by a finalist playing-off to decide the 3rd / 3rd equal placing/s. This means that all medal winners, except possibly for third-place in a round-robin division, will have won at least one match.
