NEW ZEALAND OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPSNEW ZEALAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS' KARATE TOURNAMENTS9th & 10th July 2022 Pioneer Stadium, 75 Lyttleton St, Somerfield, Christchurch ENTRY FORMS AND INFORMATION The 2022 NEW ZEALAND OPEN Karate Championships & NEW ZEALAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS' Karate Tournament will be held at the Pioneer Sports Stadium, 75 Lyttleton Street, Spreydon, Christchurch. To participate in the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Karate Tournament, players must currently attend a New Zealand Secondary School (home-schooled competitors can not enter). Entries for the Secondary Schools' event are via the player's club, not the school. Please note: only players in Years 9 to Year 13, inclusive, can enter the Secondary Schools' event. Each club is asked to print the Secondary Schools' Registration Form (to be found in the uploaded documents) so each player can then have their entry endorsed by their secondary school.

***PLEASE NOTE DIVISIONS ******* Development – For kyu grades only and all competitors 9 years & under. Must do development kata but can repeat consecutively. You can only be in this division a maximum of 2 years. Intermediate – More experienced in tournaments but not at the premier level yet. Kata has free choice in all rounds but cannot repeat consecutively. You can only be in this division for a maximum of 2 years. You cannot be selected for NZ Teams for overseas events if you compete in this division. Premier – Any age, any Kata no repeats, WKF rules apply. Eligible for NZ team selection Kumite – All Kumite divisions will be split into weight divisions so please make sure your weight is correctly entered otherwise you may be disqualified from that weight division.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: All Entries must be received by 24th June, accompanied by entry fees and correct information. Incorrect entries and non-payment will show as an unapproved entry on the Waiting list in SportData. All Coaches, Referees & Match Officials (table staff & mat marshalls) need to be entered into SportData, please. The following dress and safety equipment code will apply:

COMPETITION RULES As per current WKF Rules with the following modifications KUMITE RULES TO APPLY TO ALL KARATE NEW ZEALAND (UNZKO) SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS: On scoring/contact: 1. 9 yrs and under – Techniques to the head can score but absolutely NO contact will be allowed. Any contact at all, (unless by Mubobi) including skin touch, will be penalised. The first player to 8 points or the player with the most points at the time up will be deemed the winner. All competitors in this division will be classed as development and will be split by weight and grade 2. 10-13 yrs - Techniques to the head can score but absolutely NO contact will be allowed. Any contact at all, (unless by Mubobi) including skin touch, will be penalised. 3. 14yrs+ - Cadet (14/15), Juniors (16/17) and seniors (18+) – as per WKF rulebook. Bout duration: 6 - 9 years Bout duration 1.5 minutes 10 - 13 years Bout duration 2 minutes 14 - 17 years Bout duration 2 minutes 18+ years Bout duration 3 minutes KATA IS TO BE JUDGED AS FOLLOWS: Premier Kata divisions will use the new WKF points system other divisions will use the WKF flag system.. Compulsory Kata list: Heian, Pinan, Gekusai, Saifa, or any other Kihon Kata. In the 9 yrs and under division competitors are required to perform “Compulsory Kata” (listed above). Team Kata 9yrs and under only one kata required, Bunkai is not required for medal rounds 10-13yrs Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds 14-17yrs Kata can be repeated but not consecutively, Bunkai required for medal rounds 16yrs+ Free Kata in all rounds, no repetition permitted, Bunkai required for medal rounds
WKF Kata System (as of 1.1.2020) - the Number of Groups Kata Required
Repechage:Divisions with three competitors will be run round robin with the placing decided on the number of wins achieved. If each competitor has one win each then placing’s will be decided on the total points scored. If total points scored are even then total points scored against will be calculated with the lowest total declared the winner. Divisions with four competitors will have a match between the two competitors who have not won a match to decide on one third place. Divisions with four to eight competitors will have one third-place decided using the repechage system Divisions with nine or more competitors will use repechage to decide the third-equal placing. For Karate, repechage involves the competitors who were beaten by a finalist playing off to decide the 3rd / 3rd equal placing/s. This means that all medal winners, except possibly for third-place in a round-robin division, will have won at least one match. Coaches As per WKF rules, follow the code of behaviour and the dress code, namely club or national tracksuit. Only one coach can be on the mat at a time, only official coaches on the mat and in the warm-up area.
HEALTH AND SAFETY: Please follow government guidelines for COVID-19. A reminder to the players, coaches, supporters, the public, and event workers, if you are unwell, DO NOT ATTEND. As part of Health and Safety, we need to ensure that player weights for Kumite are correct, to avoid injuries. Therefore, check that player weights for Kumite are accurate on Club information in Sportdata. An incorrect weight category entered could result in disqualification from that event - no refund! In the event of an emergency, we will follow the lead from the event centre staff who are trained for these situations, Stay calm and listen to the microphone announcements.
REFUND POLICY: A full refund of the Entry Fee can only be made if a competitor withdraws before Thursday 7th July, as the draws will be finalised the next day. Refunds after this date will only be provided if a Medical Certificate is sent to the Organising Committee. If your event has been cancelled due to a lack of numbers and you are not reallocated to another event, you will then be entitled to a refund for that portion of your entry fee. PLEASE NOTE: The player's responsibility is to listen for events being called and report to the Mat Marshall on time. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. DISPUTES: A Tournament Disputes sub-committee will be organised to cater for any disputes during and after the tournament, Dispute Forms will be available from the Control Table - these can only be requested by a club official. Any dispute after the event must submit the dispute/ concern in an email to canterburykarate@gmail.com and this will be dealt with in a timely manner.
